US tourist dies in Beijing attack
Police and foreign officials at the Drum Tower in Beijing, China
Police were soon at the scene of the crime

A US tourist has been stabbed to death by a Chinese man in central Beijing, officials have said.

A second tourist was badly hurt in the attack at the Drum Tower monument. The pair are relatives of a US Olympic volleyball team coach.

The assailant then committed suicide by jumping from the 13th Century landmark, officials say. The motive is not known.

The BBC's Quentin Somerville says murders, especially targeting foreigners, are very rare in China.

The attack happened despite high security across the capital on the first full day of Olympic competition, with more than 150,000 police and other personnel on patrol.

Officials named the Chinese man as 47-year-old Tang Yongming, from the eastern town of Hangzhou, but said they had no idea what had motivated his attack or suicide.

"While at the Drum Tower in central Beijing, the two family members were stabbed during an attack by what local law enforcement authorities have indicated was a lone assailant," the International Olympic Committee said in a statement.

Reports say the tourists' guide was also hurt.

On the scene

The attack happened at the popular tourist attraction some three miles (5km) from the main Olympics site, at around midday local time.

An estimated 450,000 foreign tourists are expected to be in Beijing for the Games, which opened with a lavish ceremony on Friday evening.

The attack happened the day before US President George W Bush - in Beijing to attend the Games - is due to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao.

A US embassy spokesman said he was aware of the reports of the attack.

"I can tell you that we are working with the family and the Chinese authorities as we speak," Richard Buangan told AFP news agency.

US embassy officials have been despatched to the hospital where the two injured attack survivors have been sent.

Wow, the olympics is off to a flying start!

well, Hong Kong is co-organizer as well, it stands for them too.

anyway choosing not to support China is a big fail since they will win most medals surely 2-3 times more than England will.

and I say this as a guy who would NEVER support China in event, I support Serbia/Spain as always.

@kranz No one will do that trust me. No one will play with his life.

Polish olympics org. said that medals will be taken back if such a "manifesto" is done-I wouldn't give it back-of course it is losing a lot of money but you still have the medal. well England sux at most of the sports, excluding football and myb cricket and rugby. and since they didn't qualify to Euro this year (thx to guess whos coutnry :D ) and they don't have rugby and cricket on Olympics, so i don't see any case that England will win over 2-3 medals.

and as for the "Free Tibet" i think no athlete should do that, it's a sporting event and they should act in such manner, after the Olympics are over they are free to organize rallies for any purpose they bloody want but any athletic tournament is not a place to show your political choices. it's a sign of a very stupid person to do such things on such an occasion.

and now for some homeland bragging. our country got the first medal in Bejiing 2008, Snježana Pejčić won a bronze in shooting discipline, which was the first medal awarded in Beijing. WOO-HOO, let's hope other medals arrive soon...

first of all China IS NOT a casual country like Croatia, Poland, Germany, UK an so on. Every move of every citizen is controled by the country(read-communists).Second matter is that the Olympics SHOULD be a kind of award. Not all countries should get the possibility to organize it. IF the award is given to a country such as China it is shame. Is is like giving the Olympics for Pol Pot. Dunno if you saw any documentary concerning day-to-day life in China. I bet you wouldn't be so pro-china now. I said: Free Tibet. I was wrong-you know why? Because people in China ARE NOT FREE. First world should take a look at how the government treats them. MANY people died, were taken homes, suffered to make those Olympics.

The United States beat China 101-70 in one of the most eagerly awaited events of the Olympic Games.

With their host of NBA stars, the US were always expected to win but that did not stop the game being the hottest ticket in town.

President George Bush was among the spectators as the Chinese took a surprise lead thanks to 7ft 6in Yao Ming, who plays for Houston Rockets.

The American class showed in the end and LeBron James in great form.

To the great excitement of the crowd, the Chinese led 11-7 after four minutes and even though the US were ahead 20-16 at the end of the first quarter, the hosts battled to level at 29-29.

The Americans missed a string of three-point attempts and limped to a lead of 49-37 at half-time.

However, they drew away with 25 points in the third quarter as the Chinese tired.

Defending champions Argentina stumbled to a 79-75 loss to Lithuania despite 19 points from San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobli.

European champions Russia beat Iran 71-49 while Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki scored 23 points as Germany overwhelmed Angola 95-66.

Interesting game, didn't watch it all though. Don't like basketball.

MANY people died, were taken homes, suffered to make those Olympics.

and those Olympics will serve as a good advertisment for the world that China can make virtually anything. i know that China is a communist country, but ATHLETIC TOURNAMENTS ARE NOT A PLACE TO DISCUSS POLITICS. if you want to do all the "free tibet", "save the whales", "patch up the ozon" thingies there are more appropriate times and places for that.

why is it shame for China to organize it? there are other modern non-communist countries that are involved in far worse things than free tibet. Russia is supposedly no longer a communist country, although it's same thing now if u ask me, and at the opening day of the Olympics, they've decided to launch a full-scale invasion on Georgia (Gruzija for slavic speakers). how do you comment that? list of USA sins is far too long to discuss, and this thread is not the place for that, and neither are Olympics. they are a place of unity and celebration of human spirit. go organize rallies on some other 3 weeks in next 4 years...

it is a shame that sport event like the Olympics are organized by country such as China where...look me previous post Fatman69 happens. It was clearly said by polish sport specialists like retired sportsmen etc that the decision who should get it was not "clean". Putting USA and China into one basket is a mistake. You just can't compare mentioned countries attitude.Of course USA is not so "peaceful" as it might look but the human rights are simply not being broken there like in China. Russia-I don't wanna infractions so I won't comment on this country.

fatman69
11th August 2008, 05:09 PM
human rights not being broken. does "Guantanamo" mean anything to you?

bah in every choice of the host for any big tournament (which bring big cash as well) there is always some1 saying something illegal or illegitimate had happened...same can be said for Poland and Ukraine getting the Euro 2012 hosting (which will hopefully soon be revoked)...

kranz
11th August 2008, 05:34 PM
Guantanamo is on Cuba...If I were an American I wouldn't be proud of the methods used there BUT do not compare "special treatment" of terrorists and those who are suspected(clear-it is a BIG abuse how they do it) with taking people's homes only because you have to build stadium there. And many other examples. You mentioned Euro-I hope any other country will get it because Poland also didn't deserve it. Corruption in polish football is imba big. Teams that were proven to do it still play lowered only by one stage. It is also shameful.

fatman69
11th August 2008, 05:43 PM
oh boo ****in hoo for people losing their homes for greater good, you're saying their country didn't pay them a good price for their home, or give smth as a repacement for it, another house of similar size???

if yes, then wtf is the big deal, i'm for the same thing to be done in my country, when my country was building a highway from inland to our coast, some of the people refused to sell their land at offered price (which was a fair price), so the government gave permission for contractor to build highway on that land anyway. this may seem as dictatorship, but it's smth to be built for global good, not just for few individuals, the whole country would benefit from it. it would be the same for Olympics, why would a person's lazy ass dictate a billion people in that country, not to mention other Olympic countries and comittees, how and where to organize the Olympics. **** outta here, sometimes things can't be done but through force.

and if the ppl didn't get anything in exchange for their housings (which i kinda doubt but nvm), then it's very wrong. but that's a BIG if and a a very BIG maybe

kranz
11th August 2008, 05:51 PM
yeah-they got something-a piece of paper saying that they WILL get their money. So they came a few hours before this big propaganda show which some call "The Opening" waving the papers. OK-housing problem was only an example of how things are done there. You heard of internet-ban raised for the Olympics time? You heard of death sentence for selling ants on too high prices? You heard of working for 16 hours day and night?

#Keweli-but look at the scale of this abuse in China. Of course you won't see the Olympics in many African countries because they are too poor to make it. I'm just saying that China is too controversial place to organise such an event. If you could decide-would you make it in Iran? Many countries which have their people in the Oympic org. take benefits from organising it there not elsewhere. So-on one side you have fair-play soul and on the second-strict schedule and controls. Showing respect for your own people should be the key matter-I just don't see it when I read about China in newspapers or in TV.

I believe you missed the current order so I will make it for you:
1. Montenegro
2. Serbia
3. Hungary
4. Croatia

and I quite believe it won't change much after olympics as well, maybe only Hungary will go higher, because Serbia is handicaped without Ikodinovic, else there would be no doubts of first place.

about other sports, USA wins basketball 1000000000% Argentina/Spain second, Croats might reach semi-s but there are other quality teams as well, even much more quality than Croatia although.

Anyway the moment of olympics so far is USA winning swimming 4x100 to France in 0.0000001 second, it was just ****ing great race, Phelps was a big fail, but he might get better.

that was order on last European Championship. don't forget that Croatia is the current World Champion, Serbia beaten in finals, and 2 days ago. and you can't actually speak of any order when teams are so evenly matched. i mean we lost to Montenegro in Euro on account of one ball. it was a really tied game, so i wouldn't be so very optimistic if i were you...

I think that you are smart enough to notice that Euro Championship is more prestige and stronger competition than world one, as there are no weak teams from Africa/Asia/America which show up in the world and lose with big goal difference (just like Canada lost vs Montenegro 0-12).

perhaps you don't remember your loses on Euro champs, so I will remind you that you lost from all 3 teams (MN, RS, HU).

anyway, we shall see.

yes, I knew Phelps would win, but it didn't look alike after ending 4th in relay race 4x100.

even if you win Montenegro, you will be facing Hungary, which is imho strongest team on tour, and that is pretty much it for you.

if you think you can pass handball or basketball I am telling you are living in illusion, just like some serbs believed in football team which failed epicly again.

and what is sport without surprises? if everything is so bloody predictable, how come those teams in your sig never saw the next round of EURO?? how come Russia owned Holland and then failed miserably in finals?

sport is unpredictable and that's why I watch it, and i believe we have a good chance, especially in handball, our team is one of the strongest in the world, there's no point naming all the medals they've won. again i'm not saying danes suck but i think we have a realistic chance in handball. as we do in waterpolo, we lost in semi's on account of 1-2 balls, everything can happen... basketball is probably our weakest point since one of our best players (Popovic) got injured in early stages of Olympics.

yea "dream"...

it pretty much panned out they way i thought it would. basketball was a total loss, but i never saw us as one of the teams to take the medal in basketball, although we could have with a bit of luck. still we made it to the top 8 basketball teams, it still counts for something.

as i said for waterpolo, 1-2 balls will decide. too bad, but what can you do,eh?

and i remembered the Danes from EC, man their goalie was on fire then. and so were the refs, as they were today. those *** Spanish thieves practically took the pants of our team, how many fouls uncallled, how many defences from penalty area, how many stupid decisions...man i lost my nerves watching the game, those ****in Spanish faggots and their reffereing and the Danes who just mistook a rugby field for a handball arena...anyway, gg Croatia we're going to semi's

well there is a certain ammount of luck involved in goalkeepin, but still when u see how Omeyer(French goalie) gets 15-20 saves almost every game, and your goalie doesn't get 5 u can blame something on him as well. our goalie owns one day and next day he can't catch a flying pig aimed at his head, it's not how it should be. a good goalie should have consistency, average 10 saves per game would be fine by me, but 10 per game, not 30 saves 1 game and next day 3 saves ....

anyway Iceland-France handball finals, Croatia-Spain battle for bronze

lol what a fail for both, especially Serbia.

I will support Hungary in the finals.

Cavic lost regularly by his own mistake, but even if he didn't I have a feeling that they would somehow give gold to Phelps, they would come up with some stupid reason.
and its not everyone against Serbia but America buying prize EOS.

did I brag about any Serbia medalist?
No
did I brag about any Spain medalist?
No

I didn't even brag when Spain massacred you in basketball.

Serbs failed in sports such as water polo and volleyball, and our tennis players were injured, the rest were not expected to come with a high score.

Spain already accomplished a lot this year, gold or silver in basket is fine both. (especially playing against drugged Americans)

but I will brag if Spain beats USA be rdy for that.

The funny thing about that silver medal your jumper accomplished is that she won 34 sport events in a row, and failed at olympics, I myself couldn't believe although among those jumpers I supported Russian ones (but didn't care really if they win or not).

Too bad for Blanka, she really deserved gold , 30+ wins in a row :S. But silver is better than nothing (much better), we in Bosnia can't get any medal in our history, so be happy with it. We got 5 players qualify for olympic jeesus like we are some island in middle of nowhere (pacific)...

I actually wrote that, matter a fact I thought she wins gold 100% (good I never put money on Croats)

Spain didn't win, although it was tight when 91:89, than Bryant showed some imbalance, it was a very interesting game however.

America won, but even blind man would see that they had ref help in the 4th quarter, Gasol was buthcered under the basket and no fouls called.

anyway it would be shame if USA hadn't win having players like they do.

Hungary won water polo as I expected, Serbia got bronze beating Montenegro (although I didn't expect it to happen)

USA proven themselves in many sports these olympics (volleyball, basketball, water polo) too bad they will never learn to play football :D.

not really sunnis.. americans didnt get any advantage by referees... for example.. they won exactly the same amount of medals as last 2 olympics... while chinese got 30 gold medals more than on last olympics.. or so.. dunno really..

as u can see.. chinese medals come mostly from sports that referees have 100% influence or great influence.. ofc besides table tennis and badminton.

besides that .. gymastics gold medal winner for china (dunno which discipline) is 14 years old. and olympic rules says you cant compete if you're bellow 16 years in gymastics.... who knows how much lies like this chinese pulled out.
