Why Rooftrellen?

Long ago, Rooftrellen only known as team supporter. Why? Because all of his skill is meant for support. The only great about him is his ulti where it can change the tide of team battles completely. That's why most people prefer to get Refresher Orb on him so his great skill can become even greater. However, since his Agi gain had been buffed (6.48b) from 1.0 to 2.0 per level, we start to think that he can do more than just supporter. With the increment in Agi growth, his DPS output has become better and he may work as attacker as well from now on. In this guide, we will touch on how to play Rooftrellen as supporter, tanker and attacker.

1.Overview

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/2846/overview2nq9.jpg

http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNAmbush.gifNature's Guise
Changes a target friendly unit's appearance so that it blends in with the forest. It is invisible to enemies eyes, but it must remain near a tree, or the guise is lost.

Level 1 - Lasts 15 seconds.
Level 2 - Lasts 30 seconds.
Level 3 - Lasts 45 seconds.
Level 4 - Lasts 60 seconds.

Cooldown: 3 seconds.
Mana: 90/80/70/60 mana.

Writer's note: A very useful skill either for escaping or ganking. What make this skills differ from other Wind Walk skills is it can be casted on your ally. If you have hero who need good positioning (Raigor, Magnataur, SF,Techies) as your ally, you can use this skill on them and save their money for a blink dagger or lothar. If your ally is on danger, invi him and he is safe (as long as he remain near tree). The cooldown is very fast (3 seconds) which mean you can use this skill on more than 1 ally, even to your entire team (heroes only).

http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNUltravision.gifEyes In The Forest

Creates a spiritual link between Rooftrellen and a target tree, allowing Rooftrellen to see the tree's surrounding area at all times. Vision improves slightly per level. Very large cast range.

Level 1 - 100 manacost.
Level 2 - 75 manacost.
Level 3 - 50 manacost.
Level 4 - 25 manacost.

Cooldown: 300/225/150/75 seconds.

Writer's note: A skill that works both as observer wards and sentry wards. The vision is quite large and it reveal invisible units as well. Large vision will give your team more control over the map and the fact that this eye reveal invisible units can be useful for clearing enemy's wards. The eye will remain as long as the tree you put this eye on are not destroyed.

http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNNaturesBlessing.gifLiving Armor
Magically creates an armor of vines around a friendly unit, protecting it from harm and healing wounds.

Level 1 - Adds 3 armor and regenerates 1 hit point per second.
Level 2 - Adds 6 armor and regenerates 2 hit point per second.
Level 3 - Adds 9 armor and regenerates 3 hit point per second.
Level 4 - Adds 12 armor and regenerates 4 hit point per second.

Cooldown: 7 seconds.
Mana: 30/35/40/40 mana.
Duration: 40 seconds.

Writer's note: Rooftrellen's babysitting skills. This skills may not be as good as other babysitting skills in the aspect of burst healing but this skill has his own advantages; increasing armor and fast cooldown. Armor increment can be useful to increase your EHP a lot. Fast cooldown make this skill can be used on your ally as well, maybe not all but at least 2 or 3 of them. This skill is good for laning, pushing and defending.

http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNSpikedBarricades.gifOvergrowth
Summons an overgrowth of damaging vines and branches. Prevents all nearby enemies from moving or attacking and deals 85 damage per second to each.

Level 1 - Lasts 3 seconds.
Level 2 - Lasts 4 seconds.
Level 3 - Lasts 5 seconds.

Cooldown: 160 seconds.
Mana: 150/175/200 mana.

Writer's note: A very powerful ulti. Large AoE disables and damage over times for couple of seconds can bring your team an upper hand in team battles. Rooted enemy can't attack and move but they can cast spells. Only blink (AM, QoP, Kelen's Dagger) are not allowed to be casted. Combo Rooftrellen with at least 1 or 2 AoE nuker and you can take down the entire enemy team easily.

Living Armor will let you to stay at your lane longer, at least till you got your Sacred Relic. 1 point in eye for warding and 1 point in Nature's Guise for escaping. Get Overgrowth at lvl 6 since this is the skills that make Rooftrellen are feared off. Continue with maximizing Living Armor followed by eyes. There is no need to get Nature's Guise to lvl 4 since lvl 2 would be enough for the durations. Get another point on ulti when you reach lvl 11 and 16.

Maximize Living Armor after eyes. Same with previous build, leave Nature's Guise at lvl 2 since 30 seconds would be enough. Also, please don't forget to lvl up ulti when you reach lvl 6, 11 and 16.

4.Item Build

Starting Items

tango / flask

sobi mask / ring of regeneration

Explanation: It's common sense to get Tango early so there is no need for me to explain a lot. However, you may replace Tango with Flask since using Tango seems a bit "cannibalism". Sobi Mask is for mana regeneration and it can be used to complete Refresher Orb later (if you choose the refresher build). You may replace Sobi Mask with Ring Of Regeneration (can be turned to Mekansm) if you want to.

Core Items

http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNTransmute.gifRadiance

http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNBootsOfSpeed.gifBoots Of Speed

Explanation: The first thing to get after Sobi Mask is Sacred Relic followed by Radiance. Get Boots Of Speed after Radiance. This is the reason why we think Rooftrellen is a good Radiance holder:
He possess high EHP.
He has decent aspd (after buffed since 6.48b).
Radiance synergized well with his ulti.
For those who think that getting Refresher Orb first is better, this is our reason for getting Radiance over Refresher:
Rooftrellen's mana pool is low, only at lvl 19 (of course with attribute bonus) he will be able to cast ulti twice.
The faster you get Radiance, the better. Refresher is good for late game.
Radiance increase Rooftrellen's DPS a lot.
Radiance increase Rooftrellen's farming potential which he is very poor at.
Radiance increase his EHP by 8% (evasion).
With Radiance, Rooftrellen can be useful in team battles even without ulti.

Advanced Core Items

Refresher Build:

http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNHeartOfSearinox.gifhttp://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNNecromancerMaster.gifRefresher Orb + Necronomicon
This is the most common build for Rooftrellen. Adding refresher to his inventory will enable him to cast his ulti twice. With lvl 3 ulti and a refresher, Rooftrellen can disable his opponent for 10 seconds complete. However, to cast ulti twice at lvl 16 onwards he need at least 775 mana. Without any item to increase his mana, only from lvl 19 onwards Rooftrellen can cast his ulti twice. That's why necrobook is essential in this build. Not only it boost your mana a lot, this item also give you ability to summon 2 powerful Necromicon units.

DPS-Tanker Build:
http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNWirtsLeg.gifhttp://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNHeartOfAszune.gifhttp://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNINV_Chest_Chain_14.gifPower Treads + Heart Of Tarrasque + Assault Cuirass
Rooftrellen as attacker? It may sound absurd but it's not. His aspd had been buffed a lot since 6.48b. Since you already has radiance, getting another DPS item will increase his DPS output to a higher level. Combine his powerful DPS output with his ulti, he can be very devastating. With Power Treads, HoT and Cuirass, he can play as attacker and tanker at the same time.

Full Tanker Build: Hood Of Defiance + Heart Of Tarrasque + Assault Cuirass

This build may seems similar with the previous build but both are slightly different. Power Treads are replaced with HoD to increase his tanking capabilities. The spell resistance from HoD, extra hp from HoT and armor increment from Cuirass can turn Rooftrellen to a perfect tanker. Moreover, he has great Str growth and the 8% evasion from radiance make him the most suitable candidate for a team tanker.

Micro Build:
http://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNNecromancerMaster.gifhttp://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNINV_Helmet_13.gifhttp://www.dota-allstars.com/images/lists/BTNSpellShieldAmulet.gifNecronomicon + Helm Of The Dominator + Mekansm
If you have confidence in your microing skills, try this build. It was fun IMO. 2 Necromicon units and 1/2 Centaur/Furbolg can increase your team manpower a lot. Disable your opponents with your ulti and let this little buddies do their job. Once your ulti is over, use your Centaur/Furbolg to stun the enemy for another 2 seconds. Can be very powerful if you are good at microing.

Other possible items
Boots of Travel/BKB/Manta Style/Mask of Madness/Satanic/EoS/Vladmir/Armlet of Mordiggian

Items to avoid
Empty BottleIf you like bottle too much, please bear not to buy it when you're using Rooftrellen. Why? Because bottle is a good item on ganker but Rooftrellen is not a ganker. So, no bottle.

Bracers/Null Talisman
Since we are rushing for Radiance, getting this item will only delay you from getting your Radiance. We don't need extra hp from Bracers since Rooftrellen already possess high hp. The extra mana from Null Talisman are unneeded as well because we are not rushing Refresher Orb.

4.Walkthrough

Early Game

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/8433/earlyea4.jpg
Grab your items and proceed to top rune spawn area and place your first eye. Then quickly move to your desired lane to block the creeps. Rooftrellen is best in top or bottom lane because of the tree quantity. On the other hand, mid lane gives you better chance to place eyes without leaving the lane for a long time.

During early game, Rooftrellen task is to stay at his lane and try to last hit/deny as much as possible. Although his attack speed sucks, his basic damage is high so he can do well in last hitting/denying. However, last hitting may become difficult if you are facing a tough lane; perhaps a dual lane or trilane. If you face a dual lane/trilane, make sure you have an ally as your lane partner. He can be your backup so you still can last hit properly. Thanks to his high hp and Living Armor, Rooftrellen are difficult to be killed even during early game. If you're being ganked, use guise to escape. Proper placing of eye can save you from being ganked too so don't forget too put as many eyes as possible at strategic locations.

Since you're not a ganker, don't bother to join any ganking unless your ulti is ready. If possible, just stay at your lane and keep farming until you have enough gold to get a Sacred Relic. Make sure you didn't die during early game because it will delay you from getting Relic. Play safe at least till you get your Relic.

Mid Game
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/2113/midtr7.jpg
During mid game, I assume you already bought a relic and your main task now is to complete it to Radiance. Getting Radiance scroll is not as hard to get Relic so you may not have any problem with it. Once your Radiance is done, get a Boots Of Speed. Once you get your Radiance, you may play more aggressive compared to early game. Whenever your ulti is ready, try to do some ganking with your allies. Even though you are allowed to use your ulti in ganking, just make sure that your ulti is not on cooldown when your team need to push/defend. During push/defend, team battles are likely to happen and that's when your ulti will become handy. Pay attention to any lost eye and replace it with a brand new one.

Late Game
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/3951/latexi9.jpg
If the game continue to become a late game, you may need to get more items for your Rooftrellen. If you think 5 seconds of disable is not enough, get a Refresher and you'll have 10 seconds of disable. If you think that 5 seconds are enough, you may choose other build (refer to item builds). During late game, a lot of team battles will occur and if this happen, having Rooftrellen in team is such a great blessing. Don't stop placing ward because you're not losing anything from it.

5.Strategy

1.Using Nature's Guise

Escaping
Nature's Guise has made Rooftrellen as one of the most difficult tanker to be ganked ever. Not only Rooftrellen himself, being able to cast this skill on ally as well has made anyone who stay near him safe from enemy's gank. However, always check whether your enemy has Gem or Necrobook lvl 3 or not. If they do, your guise may be in danger. In critical situation, don't wait ally moves to the tree. Just cast Guise, it still give invisibility, forcing your opponents change their target for a while. This will also cancel any targeted spell that hasn't being casted.

Ganking
Not only you can use guise for defensive, you can even use it for offensive purpose. Cast guise on your allies (or yourself), go to the best position, wait the right moment, Gank. Guise can be deadly if you cast it on hero who need good positioning to cast their skills like Magnataur, Raigor , Techies or Rooftrellen himself.

Scouting
During pushing/defending, your team are likely to be ambushed from the forest. If you think there is a need to scout the forest, cast this skill on any of your ally (or yourself) and ask him to go scouting. It will be safer this way.

Guise Path
You don't have to remember this. The point here is to know the right path to move between the tree clumps without canceling your guise.

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3760/guisepathxv5.jpg

2.Using Eyes In The Forest

Observing Runes
Placing eye near a rune spawning place can give your team vision over that rune thus giving your team an upper hand in the "battle of runes".

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/4694/runetophl5.jpg
Using eye lvl 1 to observe the top rune

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/6641/runebtmkn2.jpg
Using eye lvl 3 to observe the bottom rune

Avoid Ganking
Place eye on popular ganking spot and you can save your team a lot of times. With proper coordination, your team can turn the table; be the one who gank, not being ganked.

Clearing Enemy's Wards
Unlike other scouting ability (Watcher, Scout Hawk), eye is different because it can reveal invisible units. Place eye on popular warding spots and you can take down their wards easily.

Countering Invisibility
If you're encountering invi heroes like SA or Clinkz, having eye can be a great help. This eye will reveal them, rendering their invi useless against your team.

Cliff Warding
Since 6.49, eyes casting range has greatly increased. It means, you can use bird/ward to give sight at cliff that has tree and you can put your eye there, which gives better observation. But keep in mind that this can be easily countered by heroes with "blink+tango" or "bird+tango" or purge.

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/5711/55304278gl3.gifhttp://img172.imageshack.us/img172/9730/78047616uh6.gif

Placing Eyes

http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/2039/ward2wi8.gif

3.Using Living Armor

Healing
During early game, this skill can be a good aid in health regeneration. At lvl 4, the bonus regen is 4 hp/sec, the same regen as provided by Ring Of Health. With this skill, you can save your money for early game regenerations. You can even cast Living Armor on meat wagon/glaive thrower giving them longer lifespan when pushing towers.

Increasing EHP
Rooftrellen is a natural tanker because of his high hp. With Living Armor, his armor will be increased by 12, increasing his EHP further without any need to spend your gold (Chain Mail, Plate Mail).

4.Using Overgrowth

Team Battles
This is the main function of Overgrowth; team battles. Cast Overgrowth when team battles start and your team will be in the upper hand. Team battles are most likely to occur during pushing/defending so whenever your team want to push/defend, make sure your ulti is not on cooldown. Your team will be in danger if it is on cooldown during pushing/defending.

Catch Fleeing Enemy
When your enemy heroes try to escape, casting your ulti can prevent them from doing so. Your ulti can even prevent heroes with blink (AM/QoP/Kelen's Dagger) from blinking. However, other blink skills like Time Walk/Waveform/Leap can't be stopped. This kind of blink can be casted even when rooted. Overgrowth still effects enemies in fog of war, so don't give up if the enemies vanished from your eyesight.

Escape Ganking
This is the last usage of your ulti; escaping. Only use your ulti to run if you think there is no other option around.

5. Pushing/Defending
During pushing or defending, a big fight is likely to happen. When a big fight is about to occur, this is the checklist for Rooftrellen:
Cast Living Armor on as many ally as you can.
Cast Overgrowth when the battle started.
If any of your ally are in danger, invi him.
Be your team tanker.
************************************************** **********

6.Allies & Enemies

1.Best Allies

AoE Nuker Pit Lord/Leshrac/Akasha
This is Rooftrellen's best friend. You hold your enemy's team and your ally do the clearing job. With good ally, both of you can even take down the whole team completely.

Heroes Who Rely On Creep Clearer Lich/Luna/Yurnero
This kind of heroes require an ally who can clear enemy's creeps so their ulti can function to the max. Your ulti can do the creep clearing task so having this kind of heroes as ally can be deadly to your enemy.

Heroes Who Rely On AoE Disabler Witch Doctor/Rylai/Enigma
This kind of heroes didn't differ much from AoE nuker except their skills can be very deadly on immobilized enemy. Rooftrellen can hold your enemy in their position, giving this kind of heroes very good condition to cast their spells.

Heroes Who Rely On Positioning Earthshaker/Magnus/Nevermore
Normally, this kind of heroes will get blink dagger or lothar for positioning themselves but having Rooftrellen as ally can save their gold from getting this kind of item. Using your guise as "free lothar" will always be appreciated.

Silencers Silencer/Puck/Krobelus
As mentioned earlier, your ulti didn't stop your enemy from casting spells so you need silencers to turn your ulti to a complete disable. Rooftrellen + AoE silencers = Total AoE Disable.

2.Weakest Enemies

Low HP Heroes Pugna/Sniper/Luna
These heroes are fragile, holding them with your ulti for a couple of seconds can bring them down easily. With Radiance, the task become easier. With Refresher, overkill.

No-Spells DPS Hero Mortred/Syllabear/Troll
Since these heroes didn't have any nuking or disabling spells, they're hopeless when being rooted by your ulti. They can't move, they can't attack and they didn't have any spells to cast. What can they do is just to stay still and taste the "roots of death".

3.Toughest Enemies

Heroes With Alternative Blink Void/Mirana/Morphling
Alternative blink skills like Waveform or Time Walk can be casted even when rooted. Casting your ulti on them with hope to kill may bring a major disappointment.

Anti-Overgrowth Yurnero/N'Aix/Panda
Some spells can render the caster to escape from your Overgrowth. Same as alternative blinker, killing these heroes with your ulti is very hard.

Anti-Tanker Necrolyte/N'Aix/Terrorblade

Even though Rooftrellen is known as a good tanker, these heroes can take away that title from you since they can kill tanker easily. Be careful if you encounter these heroes as your enemy

Mana Drainer Magina/Nerubian Assasin/Ezalor

As we all know, Rooftrellen's mana pool is very low. Without enough mana, he can't cast his ulti and without ulti, nothing to be feared of Rooftrellen.

Lumberjack Rikimaru/Rexxar/Lina
Heroes with spells to destroy trees can be harmful to your eyes (and guise). You'll hate them if you use Rooftrellen. "Save Our Forest"

7.Mechanics

Nature's Guise
Additional facts about Nature's Guise:
Cast range is 300 at all levels.
The maximum range from tree before someone with guise lose his invisibility is 375. See screenshot for graphical view:

If EItF is in cooldown, leveling it up will not change the current cooldown.
Casting range is 2000 at all levels but that tree must be in Rooftrellen's vision.
EitF are not shown on the minimap.
EitF didn't prevent neutral creeps from spawning.
The vision type is hovering sight so it won't get blocked by trees.

Even if the target is out of Rooftrellen's vision, it will be affected if it was in the Overgrowth AoE.
Overgrowth will not affect units that already invisible. On the other hand, entangled units will not be able to become invisible.
Overgrowth will affect magic immuned units (Rage, BKB, Repel) but they will receive 0 damage. If they cast magic immunity when entangled, they will be released from entangle.
Entangled units can't be affected by Impale-based spells (Impale, Burrowstrike, Ravage).
Entangled units can't be affected by Eul's.
Song Of The Siren can render units affected by Overgrowth to become invulnerable to it. They will receive 0 damage but the entangle are still there. On the other hand, Overgrowth will not affect units that already affected by Song Of The Siren.
Overgrowth will cancel channeling spells.
Entangled units can't use blink-based skills (AM, QoP, Kelen's Dagger Of Escape).
Triggered movement skills (Leap, Time Walk, Waveform, Illusiory Orb) can be used when entangled but the caster are still affected by Overgrowth after casting it.

9.FAQ

Q: I can't farm Relic well. Should I skip Radiance and rush Refresher/Necrobook instead?

Play safe and decent last-hitting can ensure you to get relic under 30 minutes mark. Before you get your relic, don't bother to go to other lane for ganking. Just stay at your lane and gank the opponent on that particular lane. Ask your ally to come to your lane, not you go to their lane. Play near tower, it's safer there. If I allow you to skip Radiance, I will violate this guide since it is a core item. You can refer to Torment's guide on Rooftrellen if you want to rush the Refresher/Necrobook.

Q: Radiance expose my position to the enemy, I can't do the guise+ulti combo. What should I do?

With Radiance, your enemy will know that you're there but they can't attack you unless they got Gem/Sentry/Necrobook. If they retreat when they know you're near, just wait till next time, they can't run forever. If I play against a team with Rooftrellen, I'm 99% sure Rooftrellen will be there when team battles occur, even if he got no Radiance at all. Why? Because in a team battle Rooftrellen is a must. It is impossible for a team with Rooftrellen to engage a team fight without him. Actually, Rooftrellen's ulti can work even without guise. Why? Because the AoE of Overgrowth is very big, 750 AoE!

Replay #1 A very intense inhouse game. At first I thought we are going to lose but the Rooftrellen + Luna combo change the tide of war completely. A backdoor by Rooftrellen (takatoo) end the game

Replay #2 Another inhouse replay. We play against the same team as previous replay. Watch how Rooftrellen laning (solo) against Viper in the middle lane.
