1. Kraken Shell - Leviathan's 2nd skill, this is a 100% chance to block 7/14/21/28 damage. Its other effect is clearing all debuffs from Leviathan every 11/10/9/8 seconds.

2. Stout Shield - this item gives a 40% chance to block 30 damage, or an equivalent 12 damage on all attacks. It costs 300 gold.

3. Vanguard - this item gives a 65% chance to block 35 damage, or an equivalent 22.75 damage on all attacks. It costs 2275 gold total, assembled from a Stout Shield, a Ring of Health and a Vitality Booster. Other effects are +250 HP and +5 HP/sec.

Damage block comes before armor reductions and reduces physical attacks.

If a unit with 1 Stout Shield and 5 armor (equal to 23.08% damage reduction) takes a 70 damage attack:
A. The unit has a 40% chance to take 31 damage - Stout Shield takes effect ((70 - 30) * (1 - 0.2308))
B. The unit has a 60% chance to take 54 damage - Stout Shield does not take effect (70 * (1 - 0.2308))

If you have more than one damage block source, they are individually checked in reverse order of acquisition, and only one can trigger.

That is, if you bought a Stout, then a Vanguard, the Vanguard is checked first, then the Stout. If the Vanguard's block succeeds, then the Stout will not be checked anymore.

Because of this, it is highly recommended that if you plan on getting multiple damage block items, that you get your Stout Shields before your Vanguards, so that the higher damage block will be the first in line to take effect.

This is especially true for Leviathan, because if you bought a Stout Shield THEN learned 1 level of Kraken Shell, your Stout Shield will never be used. Kraken Shell was acquired last and is thus checked first, but since it always goes off, the Stout Shield never has a chance to kick in.

LoneWanderer:

Actually, you can always drop the stout shield and pick it up again after you learnt kraken. That will restart the order of acquiring and make stout shield the last acquired damage block item.

In that case, the optimal order would be Kraken Shell, Stout Shield then Vanguard. Even if your 2 items fail, Kraken's 100% chance will act as a safety net, taking effect no matter what.

If you want to know the specific percentages for a particular item combination, just ask and I'll add them on a case-to-case basis.

Sample cases:
1 Stout Shield
40% chance to take 30 less damage
60% chance to take normal damage

2 Stout Shields
64% chance to take 30 less damage
36% chance to take normal damage
*Unlike other stacking items, you do not get a chance for a double effect, since only one source will ever trigger.

2 Vanguards
87.75% chance to take 35 less damage
12.25% chance to take normal damage

1 Stout Shield then 1 Vanguard
65% chance to take 35 less damage
14% chance to take 30 less damage
21% chance to take normal damage

1 Vanguard then 1 Stout Shield
40% chance to take 30 less damage
39% chance to take 35 less damage
21% chance to take normal damage
