View Full Version : A history of DotA on eurobattle, as we see it

Why here and not on dota topics? because you can't have a "history" without the ss ppl. Some will say "dota = farm". Maybe, but this is about "dota on eurobattle". And this, my friends, means ss people.

I wasn't here from the beginnings. I played on US East for a long time, then some friends brought me here and I loved it. I still miss the backdoor part, but having friends (and ennemies, ofc :D ) will make the things interesting again.

In the beginnings, there was dark.
You had to play one day if lucky, one week if not, to find someone to add in your friends list. Quitters everywhere...and what satisfaction when you could merge some friends lists!

Banlists made things a little easier, but not perfect. So the next step was near.

Private games..."and this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship"
For good games, one recipe: bring in your friends. And their friends. And so on, until full :) When tired of dota, fix the hour for the next day and do it again.
This approach was good for a while, but had a major inconvenient: you'd play the same ppl over and over, and this limited progress.

Clan wars. Well, that was interesting. Tournaments lead to hundreds(?) of clans. Different approaches, different skills, one domination: clan ss. For a long time, they had the strongest team on this server. Good clans were formed by playing against them. You wanted a good game? you had to go on ss channel and wait for an invite to a private game. And clans evolved.

Safelist. It was inevitable, most servers had their safelists, and after some time (xpam was always more conservative, don't u think?) the first safelist was implemented. At start, only friends of ss, xdt, sns; then another ppl joined, after they played (invited) with or against safelisted people. Vote at the end, or admins decision for new memberships.

The dark age...again
Suddenly, ppl got bored. Clans gone away, ppl gone WoW or real life, no more safelist. Back to pubs, then private games

The new safelist.
The longest (by now) form of gathering ppl to play dota. Why was this one better than the previous? because it was made around the rules, not the people. Even if some people left, the rules remained...and so did the safelist.

Well, my battery is going low...so I'll come back tomorrow with gamestyles as part of dota history on eurobattle

It looks like a white night, so I'm back :)

Let's go with the gameplay on eurobattle.
It was strongly linked to the stages I mentioned in the previous post; you'll figure which one goes where, and the exceptions, too.

When it was dark, each team had 5 leaders. That was really funny...for a while. Then the swearing came in...still funny :happy1:

Then people started to organise themselves, and soon there were more directions to follow. And one common thing. An axiome: DOTA = FARM

The tacticians

The gangbangers
They used to kill people. Sneak from behind, sneak from forest, used lothar's, used riki, bone, gondar or tree's invis...they just came from nowhere and killed. Nobody was safe, not at creeps, not on lane, not under the towers, not even in the own base. They had wards, healing pots, speed and dagons. They carefully watch the minimap to see the way ppl were going to farm. When someone was going to base, there were 2-3 gangers to intercept. When someone crossed the river, he was surrounded. When someone chased, he ended against more killers.
They farmed kills. Gold, xp - from kills. They denied farming to their opponents by killing them.
They were so addicted to kill, they even forgot to push. And that was their end, because the pushers came.

The pushers
They loved to stay together. Good teamplay, good synchronisation. They destroyed the towers asap, so they would have open way to base and some fast gold. Their items were based on str; a lot of bracers, some eul's, later necronomicons and mekansms. After a short ganking period, they ended destroying towers and heading to barracks. When going back to base after a push, they cleared the woods.
As favourite combos in -ap games, they had stunners + agility ranged or healers (omni, necro, silencer) + agility melee. I can still remember Ulisses and Omega throwing ppl up with levi, then stomping my head with centaur for a clear win in a 20-minutes pushing game
They kinda disappeared, too. Mostly because of the new game mechanics (now u get xp even if ennemies deny creeps, all the team gets gold for towers destroyed, cheaper items), and more gold in game because of superior farming.
I'd mention, as still active: Sagacity.
Good pushers I played against: ss, xdt, agl, vietnamese players...sry I can't remember all, maybe someone else will help

The backdoorers
Losing and no way out? Wait, there is one! Behind the ennemy lines :)
Lycan with wolves, mom and bkb, bone with fire arrows, all you need is dmg and imagination. Because of them, a new item was added in the game: scrolls of tp. Even now, using scrolls gives towers a boost of armor (boots of travel - no); they dealt so much dmg in a short time, as 2 players were needed to stop them hitting the barracks. Bd on towers was their favourite, because of the nice gold rewards. They used wards to see the defenders gone, the defenders used wards to see them coming. Both were watching the minimap, for the same reason. When people were aware of backdoor, they came with scissors backdoor, making the defence a pain and farming - a nightmare.
Unfortunatly, a short and poor history on this server. People prefered to throw away a dimension of the game and added anti-backdoor rules. Yes, people are afraid of what they can't understand...but the show must go on

The strategists

How to farm under pressure? How to stop killers and pushers? They tried to find some answers

Lay and pray
The gangbangers can't be everywhere in the same time. So: buy wards, discover every whole in the tree, use terrain for their advantage, watch the minimap to see where the killers are heading, stay full hp and farm like mad. And, most important, have a tp scroll :) When they are hunted, they try to make them walk as long as possible, so they buy time for the team...to farm, to get some towers or to retreat. When all ennemies just dissapear from the minimap, they know the end is near...so they use all the spells on creeps to get some more gold. They spread, so they can't be hunted more than one at a time. They gather good items rather than level 1 items, until they are strong enough to push

[4+1]
Early pushes can be stopped or delayed by 4 ppl, while the 5th is getting stronger...or the opposite way. There are more ways to do it:

1. The killer. (this part is more tactic than strategy, but here is its place)
He is legally pumped. He gets all the kills. Everyone throws spells at cooldown, avoid last hit on the heroes and he takes the gold and xp. When he is about to die, someone else suicides to save him. Aegis? it's his, even if they have to bring it in the base. Someone else buys the wards, another one healing pots, he gets all the heals and he has the last hits on the $$$ towers and creeps. He grows so strong, as he will have at least 3 levels over anyone else on the map. Even if his items are good, he is the last to enter the battle ...but he will get at least triple kill.
As a major disadvantage, he needs known players to do this.
He will stop a push by revenging his dead teammates.

2. The firestarter
He is the soul of his team. He is so skilled, that he can kill both the opponent creeps and his creeps - well, maybe except 1 creep :D He soloes the enemy forest lane, buys wards and checks the forest on a regular basis. Whenever someone is going to creep in the forest, he will be there to kill him low hp. When a teammate is being chased, he's there for the rescue. He is the first to jump into the battle, and he will be standing at its end. He has full support from his team, he coordinates the offensive and occasionally gets free kills as a reward for his high expenses. He ignores early enemy pushes, just to become a little stronger.
He tries to delay the opponents development, so his team can farm peacefully.
He is like a Chuck Norris in DotA: he ends a push by being there, a push will succeed if he starts it.

3. The farmer
He has a good farming hero. When his team tries to get a tower, he is somewhere in the forest. When his teammates see a lot of creeps coming to an undefended tower, he sees a lot of cash coming to him. He feels so sorry about any unkilled creep, as he signals to his team to go kill the creeps he can't reach. When his base is under attack, he's making his way to the opponents base and tries to get down at least a tower. Mid game, his items are very good, so at least 2 opponents are needed to teleport back and defend the barracks he sieges. Late game, he suicides in exchange for barracks. Wherever is a fight, he's in the opposite side of the map, raising more gold for his cause
He ends a push by not being there.

Positioning and towers policy (on eurobattle only)

2 mid or 1 mid?
The adepts of "2 mid" claimed that is easier to overnumber the opponents on one side, to get an early tower or some kills, followed by gangs/pushes
The adepts of "1 mid" use only 1 to defend, because:
- the enemies will have to shoot uphill and miss last hits
- superiority on sides, allowing to farm the forest and make some kills
- they avoid getting towers down if they have superior creeping opportunities (they just like the things "as they are"); plus, destroying the towers will lead to mid-game, with gangbangs/pushes (which they want to avoid, while having superior farming)

On other servers there are far more game opening strategies, even with 2 soloes and 3 on a lane, or 3 soloes
They can practice some 3+2 strategies, with 2 strong heroes and 3 supporting (more than 5 levels below)

A 3-lane is cool. U get fb relatively easy even on lvl 1, but ppl in eurobnet are conservative and ive never seen it , it owns when u pick a double stun combo and a slower or another nuke of any kind, most agi/int fall when caught unprepared :).
3 soloes i think is **** tactic at least for the rest 2 heroes
they cant spilt forest ,they will be underleveled. And if u try farm in the enemy forest, its risky :)

we got in 1 min first tower
in 6 min we got second

and before elevel 6 of solo enemy heroes we got rax up

About the firestarter...I had in mind AnataS, with an amazing 23-2 naga vs top players. The replay was posted somewhere on the forum, I think it was for the old safelist but not so sure...
If you'd see his items, you'd ask for -rep, for sure

@Sagacity: venge (aura, terror), lycan (wolves, buff), furion, omni (for ulti), enigma. We could try any version one day, should be fun. I'll chose techies instead of enigma, ofc :D

What about freestyle? :D
